About Enforcement of the Ohio Building Code
Critical to real estate construction is Ohio’s Building Code. All commercial construction requires a building permit, which serves as the basis for a final inspection and occupancy permit.
Housed in the Department of Commerce, the Ohio Board of Building Standards enacts and manages Ohio’s state building code. The Board also authorizes each local building department, and provides plan review when no locality otherwise provides that service.
The Ohio Fire Marshal issues contractor Fire Safety certification to contractors constructing plumbing and fire alarm systems. In addition, the Fire Marshal enacts and manages Ohio’s state fire code.
Finally, the Ohio Board of Building Appeals hears requests from owners, contractors, and public authorities for variances or enforcement of Building Code requirements.
